Giving Back: Pikes Peak State Park
Mom & Dad loved to camp at Pike's Peak State Park near McGregor, Iowa. If you happen to be visiting the park, please take special notice of all the younger trees that were planted in the median of the main parking lot, near the main overlook, and in the campgrounds. Mom and Dad had noticed that many trees in these popular areas are at or nearing full maturity and that no younger trees had been planted to eventually replace them. In an effort to assist, over several years prior to and after their passing, Mom, Dad and the rest of our family have planted many trees throughout these areas. Funding was obtained through a grant Mom received, from personal donations, and from memorials in their names.
In addition, there are two gazebos North of the main overlook along the sidewalk that have 2 large limestone tables. These were placed in honor of Patricia and Dale from memorials received after each had passed.
It is our hope that the trees and the tables will benefit our family, friends, customers, and all that visit and enjoy the park for generations to come.
In March of 1977, Dale Demmer along with his partner and cousin Merlin Clemen started C&D Construction out of a garage in New Vienna. After about a year in business, Dale and his wife Patricia took a major chance, and a substantial loan, and bought the entire business. It didn't take long to start filling up the schedule with projects. To provide the best service, it was essential to start expanding into a larger location. Dale and Patricia built a new facility on the corner of Patricia's family farm in rural Dyersville, not far from New Vienna. The larger space was able to store more equipment and products. At the time C&D was completing mostly shingling, repair and siding projects, but quickly moved into steel roofing and siding.
As steel roofing and siding was beginning to take off, C&D was one of the first in the area to make a major switch. New methods and new equipment was built to help get the job done most effectively. Our custom built hydraulic scaffolding lift, the "Rig" was built to lift a 30' wide platform, 45' into the air to deliver sheets of steel right to the roof of some of the tallest barns. This machine has saved us and our clients thousands of man-hours that would have been lost setting up traditional scaffolding. Additionally, because of the large volume of steel we were installing, we were one of only 2 contractors in the entire country that could purchase product directly from the manufacturer and have delivered directly to our shop.
The 1980's were a difficult time because of the high interest rates from the "farm crisis". However, with Dale's constant focus and far too many late nights driving the countryside to complete bidding and estimating, C&D was able to keep the crews busy as important farm repairs still needed to be done. By the late 1980's, the economy began to turn around and C&D was moving forward. To provide the best service in these times, C&D needed even more advanced equipment to more efficiently reach projects at greater heights and be able to set rafters. Our solution was to purchase a used "bucket truck" with a 50' vertical reach and later a used "digger derrick" with a 40' crane and large diameter ground auger.
In 1990, Dale saw an opportunity to provide service to his customers from start to finish. By adding a full slate of concrete services, C&D was able to complete the entire job from ground up. A large inventory of steel-ply cement forms, accessories, and a skid-steer loader as well as fabricating our own custom trailers in our shop to transport the new equipment made C&D a one-stop construction shop. This decision paid off and for many years thereafter we operated 2 crews of workers, concrete and steel. At about this same time, more of the family became involved as Dale's eldest son Randy started working full time throughout the summers. Randy started full-time year-round in 1995. In the mid 90's, Dale's second son Terry began working full-time summer's and school breaks on both crews; and has rejoined the crew to assist on rare occasions. Dale's youngest son Chris, would later work a few summers as well.
Since the mid 90's there have been a number of changes. Randy became the foreman of the steel crew while Dale remained the foreman of the concrete crew. Father and son often collaborated on many new building projects as Randy learned to provide the best quality product for Dale's valued customers. New diverse projects continued to push the boundaries which often required updating and expanding our business by acquiring new equipment and developing innovative new tools and techniques to complete more complex jobs.
In 2012, C&D Construction was dealt a major blow when Patricia needed open heart surgery. A few weeks after surgery, complications arose and her health rapidly declined. She passed away on August 7th with Dale by her side at age 58. In the weeks that followed, Randy's wife Pam stepped in to take care of the accounting and record keeping that Patricia had completed from the very start. Dale resumed working, and quickly went to task on his largest project ever.
However, tragedy again struck our C&D family in early October 2013. Dale was diagnosed with stage 4 Esophageal Cancer and it was progressing rapidly. With the onset of chemotherapy treatments, Dale was forced to take off his tool belt one last time and officially retired on December 31st. After less than 3 months of treatments, Two weeks later, January 13th, 2014, Dale passed away at home surrounded by his family at 5PM, "Quitting Time"... only minutes before his crew returned to the shop after completing the final touches of his very last building project. He was 62. For the hundreds that came to the visitation, many noticed his tool belt placed beside the casket, exactly as it was when he last removed it, as a reminder of his great skills and experience using those very tools. An American flag draped his casket for his military service to the US Army in Vietnam/Cambodia.
With C&D in the hands of their sons: Randy, Terry and Chris, as a family we recognized that our business has weathered many ups and downs since 1977. For over 20 years Randy has learned the business from the ground up through his early days as a general laborer, foreman, manager and now the owner. Randy has a vast amount of hands-on construction knowledge and experience and has been leading "C&D Construction Solutions Inc." forward using the same high quality building practices and commitment to providing excellence that Dad was proud of. Randy's wife Pam is the company accountant/ office manager. Terry continues to assist as needed while also providing innovative ideas as well as marketing, and graphics experience. Chris, also knowledgeable in construction materials, continues to advise on new products being offered from the manufacturers that he represents.
Since 2014, Randy has been actively expanding the services provided by C&D. The first major change was a step back into the past and once again offering blown insulation services with a top quality 2 stage agitation blower. The next addition was to move into a product that Dad had been considering for several years, steel frame buildings. Partnering with Rigid® steel buildings, C&D became the first company in Iowa to start selling this great quality product. Finally, along with steel frame buildings was the logical move to acquiring a state-of-the-art closed cell spray foam insulation system; providing the industry's highest rated energy efficient available to all our customers.
2017, was our 40th year in business and brought some exciting changes! 40 years to the week after the business opened, 7 acres of commercial property, only a few hundred yards from the garage that served as our original location, was purchased. C&D broke ground on an entire new facility featuring an 80' wide by 180' long steel frame building. Completed in early 2018 with over 15,000 square feet of enclosed space, the new shop is large enough to house all of our equipment in one location, with room to grow.
What hasn't changed after 40 years in business? The same personal and exceptional service from a family owned business. We take great pride in our work and craftsmanship and actively work on ways to deliver innovative solutions and custom touches to build exactly what you want for your needs.
